We have a private campsite on Swanson Island featuring tent platforms which overlook Blackfish Sound. This site is allows us the best range of sea kayaking and nature viewing options for our guests.

Johnstone Strait is located on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island and is home of many family pods of Orcas (Killer Whales). We start our season in Johnstone Strait in July. By September the crowds have thinned, the weather tends to be excellent, and all we hear are the blows of the Orcas and the lilting calls of the Bald Eagles.

Although the area is famous for its whales, our guides are very knowledgeable in the First Nations history and the local flora and fauna. Rather than chase the whales (who travel at speeds up to 45km/hr!), our guides plan the days to give us the maximum chance to be near the Orcas if they are in the area, while ensuring that you experince in the Strait to its fullest potential.

We're located in Port Alberni on Highway 4 - the Pacific Rim Highway. Across the road is Clutesi Marina, where fishing boats are launched to go out the Alberni Inlet to the open Pacific Ocean. Some of our sea kayaking day trips start from here. We rent Seaward sea kayaks and Rocky Mountain Bicycles. Shuttle service for Log Train Trail. Batstar is surrounded by walking trails along the Somass River and the paved trails along Kitsuksis Dyke. This is all part of an estuary where you can see all sorts of bird life and the occasional Black Bear. 5 species of Salmon swim in the Somass. Grab lunch from Batstar Cafe & Picnic and sit on the benches and relax by the river.
