Who Can Go?

Batstar Guests
With a maximum of 10 guests with 2 guides (8 guests maximum in the Broken Group Islands, Kyuquot Sound & the Central Coast), we are small group specialists. We have taken out families, groups of friends, corporate groups and single kayakers.

Most of our guests have never been in a touring kayak and it is rewarding to see people get in touch with the rhythms of nature. Watching people react to an environment that is typically much different from their regular one makes our job very enjoyable. The whole notion of confronting the unknown or the out of the ordinary tends to make people quickly forget the outside world and quickly unwind once they get comfortable in their new environment. This is where our guides make your trip extraordinary. The sooner you get comfortable, the faster you will start to explore this rich and diverse land & seascape.

If there is one common feature of a Batstar guest it would be their reaction to the physical beauty of the West Coast. The mixture of ocean, islands in a backdrop of the Vancouver Island and/or Coastal mountain range presents an ever changing canvas. It is a dynamic area, where open ocean meets land and the tides, waves and swell have a pervasive, persuasive rhythm. Most people like it—a lot.

Novice (to expert) Kayakers
The Broken Group Islands is a wonderful location for first time and novice paddlers. The inner islands are well protected from the open Pacific Ocean and the currents throughout the islands are negligible. As people get comfortable on the water in the kayaks, we'll travel around the exposed outer islands, experience some swell and look at the winter storm ravaged coastline.

Clayoquot Sound and the Deer Group are also destinations that we take beginners on but do not recommend them for families with young (under 12) children as these areas are more exposed to the open Pacific Ocean.

Intermediate (to expert) Kayakers
The Central Coast trips are for kayakers with intermediate skills. Typically people on these trips have taken a trip with us before or have been on another guided trip and are already comfortable in kayaks.

More experienced kayakers typically want to spend more time in the sea kayak circumnavigating islands and exploring the outer coast. The distances we cover each day are longer than in the Broken Group Islands. It is not uncommon to have a 15 nautical mile day on an intermediate trip.

Hiking
The trip to Della Falls requires that you wear a backpack with 35 - 50 lbs of gear (depending on your size and strength). While this is a great trip for novice hikers, it is highly recommended that you get in some hiking with a pack to get your body conditioned to carrying a load. Contact us for more information.

Ages
The age range for our sea kayaking clients is 5 and up. The Della Falls hike is only for people 15 and up. Our bicycling trips are for those 12 and up. Children 15 and under must be escorted by at least one adult. 16 & 17 year olds can come unsupervised with their parents' consent. Some trips have age restrictions.

Allergies
Some of our guests are allergic to peanuts, fish, shellfish, etc. and we have been able to easily adjust our menu. Very little of our menu is comprised of packaged goods, typically just the salty snacks & granola bars, etc. All of our fruit and vegetables are fresh and whenever possible, organically grown on local farms. Our desserts are centered around fruit including our made-in-the-field sourdough cake with fresh fruit compote on top.

Fitness
You do not need to train to go sea kayaking but as with any activity, you will enjoy it more if you are moderately fit. If you plan a fitness program and have not been active for a while, consult your physician. There are some kayak specific exercises which a good personal trainer can show you. Contact your local fitness club.

Custom Invitation Packages
Batstar will also provide groups booking entire tours with a custom invitation package for your prospective guests. 25 colour invitations with your logo/message on designer paper including RSVP envelopes and reply cards will be sent to you within 2 weeks of Batstar receiving your EPS corporate logo via e-mail or courier on a CD.

We're located in Port Alberni on Highway 4 - the Pacific Rim Highway. Across the road is Clutesi Marina, where fishing boats are launched to go out the Alberni Inlet to the open Pacific Ocean. Some of our sea kayaking day trips start from here. We rent Seaward sea kayaks and Rocky Mountain Bicycles. Shuttle service for Log Train Trail. Batstar is surrounded by walking trails along the Somass River and the paved trails along Kitsuksis Dyke. This is all part of an estuary where you can see all sorts of bird life and the occasional Black Bear. 5 species of Salmon swim in the Somass. Grab lunch from Batstar Cafe & Picnic and sit on the benches and relax by the river.
