Sea Kayaking - The Queen Charlotte Islands Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site
Sea kayaking in the Queen Charlotte Islands - especially Gwaii Haanas Nation Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site - is a life affirming moment for sea kayakers. The landscape largely escaped the last ice age are many differences in the biota compared to other coastal
habitats. The Haida culture is very strong and visiting their watchman sites in the Park is a highlight of the trip. We take one day at the end of the trip to visit Graham Island - all the way to Masset, the start/finish of Canada's Yellowhead Highway. Along the way we'll stop to admire and perhaps purchase some Haida arts & crafts.
We partner for this trip with Moresby Explorers who are renowned for their guides' water taxi expertise and extensive knowledge of the Park. Their certified lead guide will help us find some of the hidden sea kayaking gems of this magical and historic place. We recommend that you've taken a multi-day tour before you join us on this 10 day expedition.
We're located in Port Alberni on Highway 4 - the Pacific Rim Highway. Across the road is Clutesi Marina, where fishing boats are launched to go out the Alberni Inlet to the open Pacific Ocean. Some of our sea kayaking day trips start from here. We rent Seaward sea kayaks and Rocky Mountain Bicycles. Shuttle service for Log Train Trail.
Batstar is surrounded by walking trails along the Somass River and the paved trails along Kitsuksis Dyke. This is all part of an estuary where you can see all sorts of bird life and the occasional Black Bear. 5 species of Salmon swim in the Somass. Grab lunch from Batstar Cafe & Picnic and sit on the benches and relax by the river.
