Discover the Alberni Valley - Bicycling, Hiking & Sea Kayaking
The Alberni Valley is in the Pacific Temperate Rainforest and as such, water defines this area. This is an area where millions of liters of fresh water enters the ocean daily making this area ground zero in the life sustaining hydrologic cycle. The habitat here is amazing. The estuary is rife with bird life while the forests are home to deer, black bears, wolfs and cougars. We don't have a problem with encounters with top-of-the-food-chain predators but it is very humbling to hike, bicycle and sea kayak in an area where the term wilderness still means something. While it is world famous for its multi-species salmon runs, scratch a little deeper and you'll find world class bicycling, hiking and sea kayaking. This area was so prosperous from the forestry and fishing industries, little thought has gone into promoting tourism here. Times are changing and Batstar has the most comprehensive day trip and multi-day trip packages available here. We don't specialize in fishing charters but can help guests find licensed guides who do.
We're located in Port Alberni on Highway 4 - the Pacific Rim Highway. Across the road is Clutesi Marina, where fishing boats are launched to go out the Alberni Inlet to the open Pacific Ocean. Some of our sea kayaking day trips start from here. We rent Seaward sea kayaks and Rocky Mountain Bicycles. Shuttle service for Log Train Trail.
Batstar is surrounded by walking trails along the Somass River and the paved trails along Kitsuksis Dyke. This is all part of an estuary where you can see all sorts of bird life and the occasional Black Bear. 5 species of Salmon swim in the Somass. Grab lunch from Batstar Cafe & Picnic and sit on the benches and relax by the river.
